The Benefits of Bodyweight Training

Posted by: Daniel | Comments (0)

Have you ever been so busy that you just couldn’t squeeze in that trip to the gym? I mean, you’ve got to juggle kids at home, a demanding boss that just wants to milk you dry out of every last drop of energy you have and even thinking about spending time with your partner just seems too difficult.

So what if you could cancel your expensive gym membership (that hardly gets used anyway) and still reap the benefits of a fitness lifestyle all within the comfort of your own home.

Don’t think it’s possible? Well you haven’t been introduced to the benefits of bodyweight training.

Bodyweight workouts are a lot more than just push ups, sit ups and squats. Even I just used to think that pretty much summed it all up but I was pleased to know that bodyweight workouts give you not just an effective at home exercise plan to keep you on track, but can even give you better results than using those boring machines in the gym.

* Bodyweight training saves you money because you don’t need to keep forking out your hard earned on that flashy gym.

* Bodyweight workouts give you a workout range from the complete beginner to even the most advanced person wanting a workout that will leave them completely wiped afterwards.

* Bodyweight training routines save you a crazy amount of time because you take out the travel time that you’d normally waste getting to and from the gym

* Most of all they can even be done in your pyjamas in your bedroom or even in the smallest of apartments as very little space is actually required to experience all bodyweight training has to offer.

It doesn’t really take much to implement does it? Start taking action today to ensure that you can get the body that you deserve even if you don’t have access to those big fancy gyms.

This was the conclusion of research conducted at Bath University, UK. Whilst the mass media lead us to believe that levels of teenage obesity are rising due to laziness, a love affair with computer games and appalling eating habits it seems that the reality is somewhat different. A huge majority of teenage girls see improving their health and fitness as a priority.

So what is stopping them from being fitter? 49% of girls do not feel comfortable exercising in front of other people, particularly boys. In addition to this teenagers I have spoken to don’t enjoy the traditional PE activities such as football, hockey and netball. In fact many teenage girls simply don’t enjoy exercise with a competitive element instead stating a preference for more graceful exercises such as yoga or dance.

The study, conducted by the Nestle Social Research Programme also found that only 45% of teenagers eat the recommended amounts of fresh fruit and vegetables each day and just 56% check the sugar and fat levels in the food they eat. It concluded that “young people have very patchy understanding about how to monitor their eating.”

The reality is that an overweight teenager is likely to become an obese adult who risks obesity-related conditions such as cardiovascular disease and diabetes. A teenage girl’s level of physical activity has a direct influence on her weight and most teenage girls reduce their rate of physical activity once they reach the teenage years. Good exercise and nutrition are essential for long term good health.

It seems that instead of criticising teenage girls for not exercising and making poor food choices there is huge scope for delivering activity sessions they will enjoy and providing them with the tools to make healthy eating a reality. It seems unfair to place the task solely on the shoulders of teenagers. Adult intervention is needed. Recently we have seen the emergence of zumba, cheerleading, street dance and boot camp style exercise classes all of which have a huge appeal to image conscious teenage girls.

In my local area I have worked closely with Youth Clubs and Duke of Edinburgh Award Co-ordinators to deliver boot camp style exercise classes. Whilst many teenagers initially fear that these may be just like their PE lessons once they have been coaxed along and experienced a class first hand they realise that this is a great way to exercise. Class structure means they can work out with their friends in a small, all girl environment where they are all able to work at their own level without fear of competition.

A great way to boost self-esteem and actively work towards the fitter, healthier body they aspire to.

Fab in 15 Minutes

Posted by: Mark | Comments (0)

For anyone short on time, workouts that can be completed, start to finish, in around 15 minutes are ideal.

This is entirely possible, and long, boring workouts are definitely becoming a thing of the past. People have been advocating interval training for a while now; and now people are coming round to the idea of shorter, higher intensity workouts, we’re seeing new training protocols in gyms and elsewhere.

If you can get as much work done in 15 minutes as most people get done in a full hour in the gym, then who wouldn’t want to train this way?

Especially when you can devise these workouts so that you can even do them AT HOME with minimal equipment! So you’re not only saving time IN the gym, but travelling to and from it too.

Surely then this is ideal for anyone who struggles to find the time to workout, whether it’s down to a busy job, family commitments, the high cost of gym memberships or whatever else tends to get in the way of regular exercise.

By combining the cardiovascular element of training with the resistance element, you’re killing two birds with one stone. Large, full-body exercises that use most, if not all, of the muscles in your body will burn far more calories than your average gym exercise like a bicep curl or triceps push down.

By involving more muscles in each exercise (you’ve got over 600 in your body), your body needs to fuel more muscles. This means more calories are being burned (since it’s the muscles that burn calories – a calorie is a unit of energy).

This means that simply by swapping a chest press for a push-up and involving at least twice as many muscles, you’ll be burning around twice as many calories! So by swapping all of the inefficient exercises for bigger, more challenging exercises, the amount of calories you’ll burn will increase dramatically.

As an added extra to this, muscles need oxygen to produce energy, so by involving more muscles in your exercises, your demand for oxygen also increases, so you\rquote ll be out of breath from doing your resistance work too – what does this mean? It means that you’re getting your cardio work covered at the same time, because if you’re out of breath – IT’S CARDIO!

Now you’re not only burning more calories, but you’re also getting rid of the need to spend hours on a treadmill or bike too. And building your strength-endurance too.
You also need to consider the other benefits of this type of training (yes, there are more!).

Due to the nature of these exercises (large, full body), you are training your muscles to work together to perform a movement, rather than training one small movement at a time. This will lead to easier, more co-ordinated movements, improved balance and stability, and less muscle imbalances (which often lead to pain or injury).

So I urge you to try this type of training for a few weeks and see if you feel the difference. Not only will you have plenty of extra time on your hands, but you should see improvements in fitness, strength, co-ordination and mobility.

How To Find A Personal Trainer

Posted by: Daniel | Comments (0)

I think everybody who has ever trained in a gym or outside in a park has seen what I am about to share.

These are the pet hates of any Personal Trainer worth their salt and are the main things you should look out for in the perfect how to find a personal trainer search.

Let’s see if your trainer, or your prospective trainer possesses any of these traits.

Have you ever seen the Personal Trainer who starts every session with do 2 laps around the oval and then we can start. The other scenario is the guy who works in a gym and gets their client to warm up on the treadmill.

Why do they do this? One because they are not properly planned for the session ahead and are just planning to wing it and hope that they get some inspiration while you are on your run.

Secondly, because they are too lazy to research the most effective warm up techniques.

To me it doesn’t make sense to go for a run around the block and then go straight into a weights workout. It does not properly prepare your body for the job ahead.

The other thing that really leaves me scratching my head in amazement is those Personal Trainers who are still giving their clients a static stretching routine as a warm up This is just a surefire way to increase your risk of injury because your muscles don’t like being stretched like this then going straight into a full on exercise. You have to warm up your body with like motions – just the ones that you’d find in a dynamic full body warm up

It gets your body ready for the job ahead – it gets your mind ready for what’s coming and you are reducing your risk of injury big time.

So what else should you be looking for when you want to hire a Personal Trainer?

This free report will show you exactly what to be wary of and what you really need to know. I’ve broken ranks with the “PT Industry” to share these secrets with you.

I know I won’t be on everyone’s Christmas card list but to be honest, I don’t care! I want you to know what you should be looking out for.
